The Welsh Team had a good day at the IRCs and looked good
in their 2XU trisuits. Iestyn Harriet won the youth boys
event after working hard on the bike to put him in contention
then dominating on the run. In the youth girls Hywells
Thomas-Howells placed 2nd and Zoe Thomas 4th. In the TriStar
3 Girls Megan Withers placed 6th.
The rest of the TriStars performed well and gave there
all.
Welsh Junior and Youth Duathlon Championships
29 April 2009
Prestwold Hall was the venue for the Welsh Junior and
Youth Duathlon Championships which was incorporated into
the National Duathlon Championships. First off was the
junior males with Luke Watson setting a personal best
for the first 5km run and was well placed on the bike
in one of the lead cycle groups. On the final run he maintained
a fast pace to hold off the group and finish 7th overall
and took the Welsh duathlon title. Younger brother Jake
stepping up to junior this year also had a very good race
finishing strongly 18th pace overall and taking 2nd in
the Welsh Duathlon Championships. In the female junior
race Elinor Thorogood produced another strong display
on the bike and clawed her way back with a very good final
run to finish 4th overall and take the Welsh duathlon
title.
In
the male youth race Wales fielded a strong group of athletes
from the talent ID squad. At the end of the first run
leg Iestyn Harrett established a small lead closely followed
by Liam, Grant, Josh and Owain James. He managed to hold
on to his slender lead working well in a small cycle group.
In hot pursuit Liam and Grant who were cycling hard to
bridge the gap but were unable to do so when they reached
the transition for the final run leg. Iestyn maintained
his good run form to take the Welsh duathlon title and
finished 8th overall at the Nationals. Meanwhile Liam
managed to make a small break on Grant and held on to
the finish to take second place closely followed by Grant.
Swim specialist Josh Harris put in an excellent effort
to come close behind in fourth place closely followed
by Owain James.
Overall there were very good performances by all the Welsh
athletes who contributed to some excellent racing at the
nationals.
